Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to rename a city thoroughfare after the late farm labor leader Cesar Chavez.

The council instructed the city attorney to prepare an ordinance to change the name of a portion of Sunset Boulevard, Macy Street and Brooklyn Avenue, between Figueroa and Indiana streets, to Cesar Chavez Boulevard.

The route goes through the districts of Councilmen Mike Hernandez and Richard Alatorre and Supervisor Gloria Molina, whose board took a similar action last week.

“Cesar Chavez dedicated all his life in improving the economic plight of the poorest of the poor,” said Alatorre, who introduced the motion.

The city will mail notices of a proposed street name change to owners or occupants of properties affected by the plan, Alatorre said.

In addition, South Exhibit Hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center will be named Bradley Hall in honor of outgoing Mayor Tom Bradley, the City Council decided.
