It was a bad idea when it was first announced and it has proven to be an even worse one now that ‘the thing’ has actually made its appearance.

We are talking about the 7-foot-6 plaster and resin statue of Michael Jackson that has been erected outside the stadium of English Premier League soccer club Fulham. It was unveiled Sunday and already is the target of scorn and ridicule in the English media.

‘It looks so badly put together I don’t know which to bet on first; that it melts at the first sign of sun or disintegrates in the rain,’ a columnist for England’s Guardian said on the newspaper’s website. ‘Mind you, that’s a pretty accurate representation of the man himself, isn’t it?’

The grotesque statue, already right up there with the worst of London’s many visual atrocities, was the brainchild of Fulham’s millionaire Egyptian owner, Mohamed Fayed, who appears to be trying to out-whacko his late friend Jacko. At the unveiling, Al Fayed publicly told those who have criticized the statue that they could ‘go to hell.’

Meanwhile, a second Jackson statue has since made its appearance in London, this one the work of Los Angeles-based artist Maria von Kohler, and can be seen high up on the outside a London music studio. This one depicts Jackson dangling a baby out a window, as the pop singer infamously did in Berlin in 2002.
