New Honda Accord will heat up family sedan competition

Share

Honda provided a peek at what the next version of its popular Accord sedan will look like and it follows the curvaceous sculpted cues of some rivals in the family sedan part of the auto market, including the 2013 editions of Nissan’s Altima and Ford’s Fusion.

This will be the ninth generation Accord, which for many years has been one of the best-selling passenger cars in America. It goes on sale this fall.

“This car is the most sculpted and the most dynamic Accord yet,” said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of product planning for American Honda.

Honda will introduce the new generation Accord at a time when the current model is selling well. Sales of the 2012 Accord are up 28% through July to nearly 184,000. Only Honda’s Civic and Toyota’s Camry are better selling passenger cars so far this year.

Sales of midsized sedans approached 18% of the U.S. auto market last month and made up the fastest growing segment. Sales are growing at almost double the 14% industry rate.

It also is becoming the most competitive part of the auto market. Toyota’s new generation Camry came out last year. Nissan launched a new version of the Altima last month. Chevrolet is rolling out a new Malibu. Ford is about to launch a new Fusion.
