Fiorina to remain in the hospital overnight for observation

Republican Senate nominee Carly Fiorina will remain in the hospital overnight for observation, aides said Tuesday evening, adding that she hopes to be back on the campaign trail later in the week.

Fiorina, a breast cancer survivor, was admitted to the hospital Tuesday morning for treatment of an infection related to her reconstructive surgery in July. After being diagnosed with cancer in February 2009, Fiorina underwent chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and radiation and was pronounced cancer-free that October. She completed reconstructive surgery in July, a month after the Republican primary.

On Tuesday, Fiorina’s chief of staff Deborah Bowker released a statement saying she had been admitted to the hospital and was being treated with antibiotics. The campaign did not release any further details about Fiorina’s condition and did not say where she was being treated.

‘The doctors tending to her care will observe her overnight and are taking every precaution to ensure that she can return to her busy campaign schedule,” Bowker said in a statement Tuesday evening. “Carly is thankful for all of the prayers and encouragement she has received today from family, friends and supporters. She is anxious to get back on the campaign trail later this week and is very much looking forward to a victory on November 2.’

Fiorina, the former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, is challenging three-term Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer.
