Police fatally shoot man suspected of abducting his 9-year-old son after killing the boy’s mother, authorities say
Los Angeles police Tuesday fatally shot a man suspected of abducting his 9-year-old son after killing the boy’s mother, authorities said.
About 6:45 p.m., officers came into contact with the man, Konstantin Morozov, 48, as he was leaving a friend’s home in Encino with his son, according to Los Angeles police and the FBI.
It was not immediately clear what occurred in the moments leading up to the shooting, though authorities said a handgun was found at the scene.
The boy was not harmed and is now in protective custody, LAPD Officer Mike Lopez said
Morozov was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries. No officers were injured.
Investigators issued an Amber Alert for Daniel Morozov after responding to a shooting in the 200 block of North College Drive in Santa Maria between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Monday, Santa Maria Police Sgt. Jesus Valle said. The woman, who was only described as Daniel’s mother, was found dead at the scene, Valle said.
The FBI contacted the LAPD last night after receiving a tip that the suspect might be in the city, said Josh Rubenstein, an LAPD spokesman.
A fugitive task force working with the FBI ultimately tracked the man to a condominium complex near Lindley Avenue and Killion Street, near the border of Encino and Tarzana.
He was under surveillance for a period of time before he exited the building with the boy, officials said.
“We’re really fortunate that the child is safe,” Rubenstein said.
The Amber Alert was canceled shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday.
LAPD investigators are interviewing the officers and looking for witnesses, Rubenstein said — standard protocol following shootings by officers.
