Watch the clumsiest marriage proposal ever play out at Yankee Stadium

A couple of New York Yankee fans will have a great story to tell their kids one day.

It’s about how Dad lost the ring while proposing to Mom, and all of Yankee Stadium — and beyond — got to watch.

Andrew Fox planned to pop the question to girlfriend Heather Terwillinger during the middle of the fifth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. Both 29 year olds were wearing Yankee jerseys — him Mariano Rivera’s No. 42 and her Derek Jeter’s No. 2 — and the special moment was to be shown on the center field video board for everybody in the stadium to see.

Well, the crowd got to see a special moment all right, but definitely not the way Fox planned it.

“I opened the ring box and got on my knee, and as soon as I opened it just fell, and we couldn’t find it for the longest time,” said Fox, whose drop was jeered throughout the stadium.

The ring was nowhere to be found. As play resumed on the field, Fox, Terwillinger and many of the fans surrounding them looked all over for the piece of missing jewelry (one woman even dug through her bag of popcorn).

The search went on for nearly five minutes, with the Yankees’ YES Network broadcasting continuous updates between pitches. Finally, Terwillinger found the ring in the cuff of one of her pants legs. Yankee Stadium public address announcer Paul Olden relayed the news to the crowd, which responded with a roar of approval.

Fox dropped to one knee and proposed. Terwillinger said yes.

She said later, “I’m shocked, but I’m feeling in love.”
