Speeds reach 119 mph in police chase through San Diego and Orange counties
A speeding motorist led the California Highway Patrol on an hour-long pursuit through San Diego County on Saturday, hitting 119 mph before being arrested near the Orange County line, the CHP said.
It wasn’t clear why the driver finally stopped on northbound Interstate 15 near the San Onofre truck scales and Border Patrol checkpoint, CHP Officer Mary Bailey said.
A CHP officer first saw the Nissan Altima speeding south on Interstate 805 near El Cajon Boulevard, in the City Heights area, and tried to pull over the driver at 10:42 a.m., Bailey said.
The Nissan driver exited the freeway at 47th Street, then headed back north on I-805 to I-5.
Bailey said officers tried to spike the Nissan’s tires, but failed. San Diego police and sheriff’s helicopters assisted on the pursuit at different times.
At some point the Nissan was clocked at 119 mph. The driver did not collide with any other motorists during the pursuit.
When the driver stopped at 11:36 a.m., he was arrested and jailed. Bailey had no information about the driver or the charges.
