Sunset point of view

Eric Mitchell Shore, an interior designer, had a dream. He wanted to build a Sunset Strip-area house to take the place of an older one he bought from Brian Vidor, owner of Typhoon restaurant at the Santa Monica Airport.

Shore wanted to keep the old wine cellar as the heart of the house while newly building the rest, using the latest technology in wiring the home. Charles Fred Paul, a computer software designer, owns the house with Shore.

The end result, after the house was completed in 2001 as Shore envisioned it, is a walled and gated contemporary estate on a private promontory at the end of a cul-de-sac with views that sweep from downtown L.A. to the ocean.

The house is the highest priced yet in the “bird streets,” an area of the Hollywood Hills known for its streets with avian monikers. Neighbors include some of the highest-paid names in Hollywood: Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, Keanu Reeves, Courteney Cox and David Arquette.

Now that Shore has realized one dream, he’s ready for a new challenge and has listed his house.

Asking price: $16 million

Features: The home has a two-story entry more than 30 feet high, walls of glass, a media room, paneled library, five wood-burning fireplaces, a gated motor court, a four-car garage, an infinity pool, a koi pond and a rose garden. Among the “smart house” features are remote-controlled sun shades, security doors, two satellite dishes and a central vacuum. There is a garden-room bar with a soda fountain and two wine refrigerators.
