Authorities said a man believed to have fatally shot two Northern California deputies Friday was in custody after a massive manhunt.

Marcelo Marquez, 34, was arrested on suspicion of carrying out a series of shootings that left two deputies dead and an officer and a civilian injured, said Dena Erwin, Placer County sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Marquez was suspected of fatally shooting Danny Oliver, a 15-year veteran of the department, who was killed after he approached a vehicle in a Motel 6 parking lot about 10:22 a.m. Friday, when a person inside fired several rounds. At least one of the rounds struck Oliver in the forehead, said Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones.

The 47-year-old deputy is survived by a wife and two children. The identity of the Placer County deputy who was also killed was unknown.

Marquez is also believed to be responsible for shooting two Placer County deputies, as well as a motorist he allegedly attempted to carjack, Jones said.

The owner of that vehicle fought back and was also shot in the head. He was in stable condition.

The condition of the other deputy is unknown.

Marquez then carjacked a red Ford F-150, authorities said. The truck was found just before 1 p.m. in Auburn in Placer County, but the gunman had fled.

Jones said a female who was with the suspect was apprehended before the gunman.
