Michael Phelps offers apology for DUI arrest
Watch: Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps was arrested in Baltimore on charges of speeding and driving under the influence.
Twelve hours after he was arrested on charges of speeding and driving under the influence, Michael Phelps has offered a public apology via social media.
It was 1:40 a.m. Tuesday when a Maryland Transportation Authority officer observed Phelps going 84 mph in a 45-mph zone and crossing double lane lines inside the Ft. McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, according to a police statement
After being pulled over in his white Land Rover, the 22-time Olympic medalist was cooperative but "unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests," the statement said.
In 2004, Phelps was sentenced to 18 months of probation after pleading guilty to drunken driving, also in Maryland. He also came under scrutiny in 2009 after the publication of a photograph that showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.
The most-decorated swimmer in Olympic history is in the midst of a comeback from retirement and is expected to try for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
