2 people OK after fears they were swept away in San Diego River

After a roughly two-hour search Tuesday night, San Diego lifeguards and Fire and Rescue Department personnel said two people who may have been swept away by the rain-swollen San Diego River adjacent to Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley were found unharmed.

The two -- a man and a woman -- were reported missing by a companion, who told rescue personnel that he had been with the couple earlier in the day and returned to find them missing, according to Fire and Rescue Department Capt. Joe Amador. The three were apparently living along the brushy bank of the river.

A torrential downpour struck San Diego late Tuesday afternoon, flooding streets. Several cars were crushed by falling trees. Traffic was snarled by accidents and floods. Lightning set at least two palm trees on fire in the beach area. Sporadic power outages were reported, particularly along the Interstate 8 corridor.

The man who reported the two as potentially missing was assisting in the search, Amador said. A city helicopter was also being utilized.
