Father’s Day: Four places to take Dad that go way beyond brunch

What are you doing for Father’s Day? If traveling is on the agenda, here are four places Dad might like, whether you celebrate the day on Sunday or make plans for a future getaway together.

—Make waves: Enroll Dad in the annual Kahuna Kupuna Surf Contest on July 19 at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, Calif. (Kahuna means “big chief” and kupuna means “wise elder.”) The event for shortboard and longboard surfers 40 and older features competitions for men, women and intergenerational teams of all ages, which means you and your siblings can join Dad in the battle of the waves. —Eat curry: Dad can learn about Indian food and how to make curry at the “Compassionate Chefs Cafe” in San Francisco on June 22. Twice a year the New Delhi Restaurant changes its name to host an evening dedicated to sampling food and giving back. —Mix it up: The Triple George Grill in downtown Las Vegas invites fathers to take a lesson in cocktail mixology. The pros share background about gin, whiskey, rum, tequila and scotch while teaching the art of making classic drinks and modern twists on those old favorites. —Share fries: If Dad has a competitive streak and loves French fries, take him to the annual Curley Fry Eating Contest in Wildwood, N.J., on Sunday. Starting at noon he can eat his way through 1-pound buckets of thick, crinkle-cut fries for five minutes. Amateur winners get $500; pros receive $1,000. After that (or maybe before?), fathers can ride for free at the surrounding Morey’s Piers amusement park in honor of their special day. Info: Annual Curley Fry Eating Contest
