Freshman Brad Kaaya named starting quarterback at Miami
At this time last year, Brad Kaaya was preparing for his senior season at quarterback for West Hills Chaminade. Now, he has been named the starting quarterback as a freshman at Miami.
Coach Al Golden made the announcement Sunday, with Kaaya beating out Kansas transfer Jake Heaps, who was once ranked the No. 1 high school quarterback prospect in the nation.
“As I told him, he’s our quarterback,” Golden told reporters Sunday afternoon after practice, a few hours after informing Kaaya and Heaps of the decision. “He’s not a freshman quarterback. He’s the University of Miami quarterback.”
He left Chaminade in May to enroll early at Miami and won the starting job based on his practice performances.
Kaaya started out with not many scholarship offers going into his senior season at Chaminade. But after committing to Miami in May 2013 and then leading Chaminade to a CIF state championship Division II bowl victory in the winter, he picked up scholarship offers from UCLA, USC and Boise State.
He’ll make his college debut Sept. 1 against Louisville in a road test on ESPN.
