Edible chocolate-dipped waffle coffee cups at Alfred Coffee & Kitchen in L.A.

New Yorkers may have the Cronut, but Angelenos now have the edible coffee cup.

Alfred Coffee & Kitchen on Melrose Place in Los Angeles is selling a chocolate-dipped waffle cone coffee cup called the Alfred Cone. Try saying all that three times fast.

It’s a 4-ounce waffle cone dipped in milk chocolate (just the rim), used as a cup for either an espresso or macchiato. The cones are $5 in addition to whatever drink you buy with it.

“We recommend getting the macchiato in there because when the espresso melts the chocolate, it makes a baby mocha,” said store manager Ashlee Lawson.

Lawson said they started selling the Alfred Cones, which were owner Josh Zad’s idea, about a month ago on the cafe’s secret menu. But if you pay close attention near the register, there is a picture posted of the cone. All you need to do to get your hands on one is ask.

“I want to say we sell maybe like 60 to 70 a day,” said Lawson. “We have a lady that makes it for us from the Farmers Market and we just keep ordering and ordering and ordering.”

The cones are made by Naomi Kashi and her partner and sister Dorit Simone of Zia Valentina at the Farmers Market. Zia Valentina serves some of its coffee drinks and granitas in the cones. Simone said the sisters make about 200 cones for Alfred Coffee & Kitchen a day.

Lawson also added that the store is planning new versions of the cone for October, Thanksgiving and Christmas, but she’s not ready to release details just yet. She did, however, let us know that a second location of Alfred Coffee & Kitchen will open Nov. 1 on Melrose, just west of La Cienega.
