Paul Feig confirms he’ll make a female-led ‘Ghostbusters’ movie

The long-awaited third movie in Sony’s “Ghostbusters” franchise will update the paranormal exterminators with a cast of female characters, director Paul Feig announced Wednesday.

On Twitter, Feig wrote, “It’s official. I’m making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That’s who I’m gonna call.”

Feig came aboard the project in August, and his tweet confirms months of speculation that his take will focus on a new generation of female Ghostbusters.

The director previously worked with Katie Dippold, the screenwriter referenced in his tweet, on the female buddy-cop comedy “The Heat,” starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. That film was a hit to the tune of $229 million worldwide. Feig also found success with a cast of hilarious women in 2011’s “Bridesmaids,” a surprise hit that helped catapult McCarthy and Kristen Wiig to movie stardom.

Sony has been trying to mount a new “Ghostbusters” movie for years, and until recently the plan was to reunite the original team of Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis. Ivan Reitman, who helmed the 1984 original and 1989’s “Ghostbusters 2,” was to return as well.

Murray, however, has proved reluctant to return to the series, and Ramis died in February. Ramis’ passing ultimately prompted Reitman to drop out of directing (he’s still on board as a producer), clearing the way for Feig to take the reins.

With the film’s course now set, the next question is obvious: Just who is Feig going to call?
