‘True Blood’ recap: Infected vampires target Bon Temps

Share

HBO’s “True Blood” launches its seventh and final season with heaps of sex, violence and supernatural terror.

It’s a typical day, therefore, in bucolic Bon Temps, La., where vampires, werewolves and other strange creatures practically outnumber the normal folk.

In Episode 71 (“Jesus Gonna Be Here”), rogue vamps infected with Hepatitis-V virus invade the town. Bon Temps must fend for itself – think New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina – as the feds deploy resources elsewhere.

The marauders expect minimal resistance when attacking Bellefleur’s Bar and Grill, not knowing that uninfected vampires mingle inside with their human partners. Carnage ensues!

Vamp Tara Thornton (Rutina Wesley) is among those killed, as mother Lettie Mae Daniels (Adina Porter) cringes in horror.

Kidnapped in the rampage are Arlene Bellefleur (Carrie Preston), Holly Cleary (Lauren Bowles) and Nicole Wright (Jurnee Smollett-Bell). Nicole’s plight is especially harrowing, for she’s pregnant by shape-shifting Mayor Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) and about to give birth.

The terrible events devastate waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), whose mind-reading ability reveals an “ugly, ugly truth.” Many residents unfairly blame her for the crisis because she advocates peaceful coexistence between humans and supernaturals.

“You are not welcome in this house of God,” Lettie Mae insists, furious that Sookie dared attend an emergency meeting at a church.

“Please let me help,” Sookie implores the gathering. After all, she knows the undead better than most, having dated rival vampires Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).

Sookie now prefers werewolves, apparently, since she shares a bed with hunky Alcide Herveaux (Joe Manganiello).

On the trail of the murderous H-vamps are Sheriff Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) and Bill, who discover a grisly, abandoned nest. Also checking out the scene are redneck vigilantes itching to kill Bill and his ilk.

Andy scares off the troublemakers, claiming he saved Bill’s “miserable hide” because he needs help rescuing girlfriend Holly and the other kidnapping victims.

Meanwhile, Andy’s faerie halfling daughter Adilyn (Bailey Noble) is under strict orders to stay locked indoors. That’s because her blood is irresistible to vampires – including Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll).

Jessica stands guard outside the Bellefleur abode, seeking to atone for the awful day she lost control and drained Adilyn’s three sisters.

“I should hate you, but I don’t,” admits Adilyn, still plagued by nightmares about losing her siblings in a frenzied slaughter.

Also haunted by the tragedy is guilt-ridden Jessica, who bonds with Adilyn by offering a sip of vamp blood. By doing so, Jessica always knows when Adilyn is in danger.

Speaking of danger, it lurks just yards away as an ominous vampire (Paul Rae) smells Adilyn’s delectable blood. And he wants it bad.

“I’m going to taste that little girl before I die,” he lustfully declares.

With dawn about to break, Adilyn saves Jessica by inviting her into the house. The other vamp burns to death on the porch, screaming as the sun ignites his skin.

Finally, Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) journeys to Marrakesh in search of vampire Eric, her missing maker. Unfortunately for Eric, he was nude sunbathing in a Swedish snowfield when vamps suddenly lost their ability to survive in daylight.

So is Eric dead? Or is he recuperating in Morocco or some other exotic locale?

As for Pam, she refuses a sleazy man’s offer to sell his son’s blood. It’s a remarkable show of restraint for Pam, who needs to feed or she’ll perish.

Drinking synthetic Tru Blood is no longer an option for vamps, since the supply was disrupted. And if production doesn’t ramp up soon, expect even greater catastrophes for the undead and living alike.
