7-foot great white shark spotted near swimmer off Manhattan Beach

A 7-foot juvenile white shark was spotted Thursday swimming near the Manhattan Beach Pier, fire officials said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department lifeguards confirmed the sighting on Twitter after it was reported at 10:30 a.m. Lifeguards, however, did not issue an advisory.

“After monitoring the shark for 45 minutes, it was deemed non-aggressive and not a risk to the public,” fire officials said on Twitter.

Video footage taken from KTLA showed the shark alongside a swimmer in the ocean.

Shark sightings, lifeguard officials said, are not unusual.

“It’s very common to see juvenile white sharks off the Southern [California] coast,” they said. “The juvenile sharks we have observed have been very docile.”

The shark sighting comes more than a month after a long-distance ocean swimmer, Steven Robles, was attacked by a great white shark off Manhattan Beach.

The 50-year-old Lomita resident told KTLA he stared the predator in the eye as it bit his chest about 9:30 a.m. July 5, then released him.

In that case, officials said, fishermen off the Manhattan Beach Pier had caught the juvenile shark on a fishing line, then struggled with it for about 45 minutes.

During the struggle, Robles and others swimming from the Hermosa Beach Pier to the Manhattan Beach Pier crossed the shark’s path and it bit Robles.

In response, Manhattan Beach officials temporarily banned fishing at the pier. The ban was lifted this week, but regulations now prohibit large hooks, certain fishing lines and fish cleaning.
