‘Cinco de Drinko’ party canceled; some call it racially insensitive

A drinking party dubbed “Cinco de Drinko” near UC Davis was canceled during the weekend after students condemned it for what they called its racial undertones.

The off-campus party was supposed to be held Saturday at a local park, but it was halted after UC Davis students protested, saying it was racially insensitive, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Student organizers promoted the party on Facebook, where they created an event page showing a photograph of four men in sombreros, flanked by two women in border patrol attire, attempting to hop a fence, the Bee reported.

“There were racial depictions that were extremely insensitive, including a border fence,” a UC Davis student body President Armando Figueroa told KCRA.

A petition urging the university to hold the students who created the event accountable drew at least 1,500 signatures.

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi told the Bee that education, possibly a diversity course, would be used to prevent similar incidents in the future.
