Dodgers promote Pedro Baez, send down Stephen Fife

Pretty soon it won’t be just the fans who will need a scorecard to figure out who all these shuffling Dodgers are. The guys in the clubhouse will need one too.

If it’s Monday it must be time for Pedro Baez to come on down. Or at least slip over from convenient double-A Chattanooga.

Baez became the Dodgers’ latest reliever Monday when they called him up and returned Sunday’s starter, Stephen Fife, to triple-A Albuquerque.

If this has become too difficult to keep up with, have no fear, Baez is likely to be with the club for only one day until the Dodgers activate Clayton Kershaw off the disabled list Tuesday.

He looks like pure emergency material for Monday, so if he actually gets in the game it’s either a blowout or the Dodgers are playing their every-other-day extra-inning affair.

The right-handed Baez is no kid – he’s 26 – but got a late start on this pitching business. He spent six years with the organization as a third baseman who couldn’t hit, so last year he was converted to a reliever.

At Chattanooga this season he has appeared in 11 games, going 1-0 with five saves and a 2.84 ERA in 12 2/3 innings.

The Dodgers have made 12 roster moves in the last five days alone, all centered around pitching.
