A San Francisco man was fatally wounded when he walked into the wrong apartment after a night of drinking with his friends, authorities said.

Stephen Guillermo, 26, reportedly pressed the wrong floor number on an elevator in his apartment building on Mission Street on Saturday, and then headed to a unit in the same location as his apartment two floors above, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Moments later, at about 1:48 a.m., a man already inside the apartment shot Guillermo.

Guillermo, a San Francisco State University student, had been drinking with friends earlier that night, officials told the paper. Amisi Sudi Kachepa, 68, later surrendered to police and was arrested in connection with the shooting death, CBS San Francisco reported.

Meanwhile, Guillermo’s friends and family were left stunned by his death, adding that he was not aggressive.

“He was such a gentle, quiet guy -- he’s just not the type that would be violent or inspire that type of response,” his cousin Emil Guillermo told the Chronicle.
