Fashion’s biggest trade show rolls into Las Vegas

Share

Retail buyers from around the world have descended on Las Vegas for the twice-yearly Magic Market Week, the fashion industry’s largest trade show.

An estimated 80,000 people are in town for the collection of Magic events and associated smaller shows, at which thousands of brands will strut their clothing, footwear, jewelry and other accessories at multiple glittering venues.

The show’s scope is reflected in its slogan: See what the world will be wearing.

The trade show began in much more modest style in 1933 by the quaintly named Men’s Apparel Guild in California. Formerly held in Los Angeles, the show moved to Las Vegas in 1988.

Nowadays, it draws a certain coterie of celebrities ready to be seen at various big-name blowouts.

But mainly the show represents several days of serious shopping every February and August by those who stock small boutiques up to major store chains. This time, they’re searching for fall and winter merchandise, scoping out trends and attending seminars on topics such as “How to market Made in America.”
