Gun scare at submarine base caused by sailor playing with air pistol
SAN DIEGO -- The gun scare at the Point Loma submarine base that led to a “shelter in place” order was caused when an enlisted sailor playfully pointed an air pistol out of a barracks window, the base commander said Thursday.
The sailor was firing the pistol at a mirror in a parking lot when someone saw the gun and made a report of a “suspicious person with a gun,” said Capt. Scott Adams.
That led to the “shelter in place” order and brought base security, the FBI and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service rushing to the scene.
The sailor, who reported to the NCIS when he heard the “shelter in place” order, was questioned, along with a friend, Adams said.
“We are dealing with young sailors and we inform them what is and is not appropriate, but sometimes these things happen,” Adams said.
Weapons are not permitted in barracks.
