Josh Beckett, relievers strike out 14 in 4-1 win over Diamondbacks

KEY MOMENT: The Dodgers had a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning, with a man on third base and first base open. The Diamondbacks intentionally walked the left-handed Adrian Gonzalez, so right-hander Josh Collmenter could face the right-handed Yasiel Puig. “I think you have to,” Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly said, “with the way Adrian’s been swinging, and with what he did to them last week in Arizona.” Puig hit a three-run home run, estimated at 422 feet.

AT THE PLATE: Gonzalez doubled, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. In eight games against Arizona this season, he is batting .429 with 13 runs batted in. In his other 11 games, he is batting .222 with four RBIs.

ON THE MOUND: Josh Beckett and four relievers combined on a three-hitter, with Beckett limited to five innings after needing intravenous fluids to combat a bug circulating in the Dodgers’ clubhouse. Dodgers pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts, lifting their average to 9.5 per game. Their season total of 181 ranks second in the major leagues, behind the Washington Nationals.

IN THE NINTH: Closer Kenley Jansen struck out the side in the ninth inning, his second 1-2-3 inning of the season. Jansen leads the majors with seven saves. He has appeared in 13 of the Dodgers’ first 19 games, but he has yet to pitch on three consecutive days because the Dodgers had seven days off after their Australian openers, then five days off among the first 15 days when the schedule resumed in the United States. Mattingly said he would be worried about overusing Jansen if the Dodgers continued to work him “at this pace.” The Dodgers now are in a stretch of 28 games in 29 days.

IN THE EIGHTH: Brian Wilson, the Dodgers’ eighth-inning reliever, has been shaky in two appearances since coming off the disabled list. Mattingly used Chris Perez and J.P. Howell in the eighth inning Sunday, saying he wanted to try to give Wilson a rest day after he needed 23 pitches to get two outs Saturday. Yet Wilson was throwing in the bullpen in the eighth inning, even when the Dodgers used the left-handed Howell against Arizona’s best hitter, the right-handed Paul Goldschmidt. Mattingly said Wilson might have been used later in the inning, if necessary.

EXTRA BASES: Hanley Ramirez has one hit — a bloop single — in 12 at-bats since being hit on his left hand by a pitch in San Francisco last week. … Catcher Tim Federowicz has as many catcher’s interference violations as hits — two — since replacing the injured A.J. Ellis two weeks ago. Veteran catcher Miguel Olivo is batting .417 at triple-A Albuquerque, but Ellis could return in one to two weeks and the Dodgers would need to clear a spot for Olivo on the 40-man roster.
