Video premiere: Making of Lily Kershaw’s ‘As It Seems’

Lily Kershaw scored a major coup for a rising singer-songwriter when CBS-TV’s “Criminal Minds” used her song “As It Seems” in the series’ 2012 season finale, opening the door for the show to use another of Kershaw’s songs, “Ashes Like Snow,” to close out its 2013 season.

The 22-year-old L.A.-based indie-folk artist is gearing up for the release of her debut album, “Midnight in the Garden,” on Sept. 24, and she recently shot the official video for “As It Seems” at what appears to be a century-old house, located in the vintage neighborhod just west of USC.

Pop & Hiss premieres the behind-the-scenes clip on the making of the video, directed by the Lumineers and Aesop Rock associate Ben Fee. His video follows a relationship from youth to old age, reflecting lyrics that include Kershaw’s observation that “This life is as fragile as a dream / Nothing’s really ever as it seems.”

“It seems like steps in a lifetime, without being too literal,” Fee said of his concept for the video shoot. Kershaw’s song is built on rolling fingerpicked guitar harking back to the golden age of folk-based pop music in the 1950s and ‘60s. She sings the disarming melody in a vulnerable, quavering voice.

Kershaw continues her September residency at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood with performances Monday, Sept. 16 and 30, and she’ll join her Nettwerk Music Group label mate Radical Face on tour in October that includes an Oct. 24 stop at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s Masonic Lodge.
