If you happen to be in or around West Hollywood on Tuesday and think you’ll be in need of some caffeine, you may want to set this reminder on your phone’s calendar now: Verve Coffee Roasters will have a soft open of its Melrose Avenue cafe on Sept. 1. This will be the Santa Cruz-based roaster’s second location in the Los Angeles area; the first, as you may recall, opened in downtown L.A. earlier this year.

For its West Hollywood location, Verve wanted to offer an “experience that reflects the neighborhood,” says Colby Barr, who co-founded Verve along with Ryan O’Donovan. Indeed, while the crew is still putting finishing touches on the shop, you already get the sense that it will fit in quite comfortably here on Melrose.

Designed by Commune Design, the space features plenty of natural light, a lovely white oak herringbone floor, and a striking 35-foot-long copper counter in front. There’s ample seating indoors and out, with tables and benches inside, and more tables (individual and a communal), plus stadium seating, and room outside on the generous patio. There’s also a standing bar that runs along the front of the shop and looks out toward Melrose.

As for the coffee itself, you’ll find Verve’s solid lineup of espresso drinks on the menu, as well as pour-over coffees that will be made using the Modbar units you see at one end of the counter. As it appears that the weather will still be uncomfortably warm next week, it’s worth noting that there are plenty of cold drink options here, including a nitro-charged cold-brew on tap, a Jamaica Cascara tea on ice and a line of Dr. Kefir’s sparkling probiotic drinks. There are also about a dozen or so cold-pressed juices — plus a juice flight — from Juice Served Here, which also supplies the juice at Verve’s downtown shop.

To accompany your coffee and juice, seasonal pastries and baked goods from Short Cake will be in the case, and salads from Belcampo Meat Co., made exclusively for Verve, will be available as well.

When the shop is up and running, Barr says the menu will continue to evolve. Thus you can expect to soon find unique drinks available only at this shop (in fact, each Verve location will eventually feature its own exclusive drink), and the crew is working on expanding the in-house food program.

And Verve, too, will continue to build in L.A. The company will soon open another shop on West 3rd Street, and its roastery will open in the Arts District next year.

Verve in West Hollywood is open Sundays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
