When deputies in patrol cars arrived, they exchanged gunfire and Rose was shot, authorities said. No deputies were injured during the shootout.

CHP officials confirmed Tuesday that Rose was a patrol officer with the department and reported to the Barstow area office.

Rose graduated from the CHP Academy in August 2009 and separated from the department in March 2013, CHP Sgt. Mario Lopez said.

CHP officials declined to reveal details about his separation from the department.
