New salt therapy center opens in Las Vegas

A new salt therapy center — the first in Las Vegas — has opened, claiming that sessions can help alleviate various respiratory and skin ailments.

Salt Room LV uses halotherapy, the inhalation of salt crystals, to provide relief. Clients sit in a so-called “salt cave” beside a wall made of Himalayan salt, above a floor layered with salt, and breathe.

Halotherapy “helps in treating respiratory conditions such as cold, flu, allergies, asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, sinus infections, sinusitis, rhinitis, hay fever and emphysema,” according to Salt Room LV’s website.

The site also claims that “the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of salt therapy can effectively treat skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.”

Several sources note that there’s not ample medical research to support such claims. A Times report in 2010 quoted a professor of medicine who said that although salt inhalation is known to ease respiratory problems, there is no evidence that spending time in such salt rooms can provide the desired relief.

Salt Room LV is at 1958 Village Center Circle in suburban Las Vegas. It’s a 15-mile drive on freeways from the Strip.

Treatments last 45 minutes and cost $35 for adults and $25 for kids. Meditation and yoga classes are also available.
